Goodyear Honours Motorsport Heroes

MOTORSPORT has always played a fundamental role in Goodyear's success as a global supplier of high-performance tyres. It all started back in the year 1901 when Goodyear's co-founder and sales manager, Frank Seiberling offered Henry Ford tyres for his new race car to help Ford "get started" in racing. Since then Goodyear has achieved a long list of memorable motorsport milestones.

Goodyear recently celebrated this long-standing relationship with competitors in all forms of the sport by honouring those exceptional drivers at its annual Motorsport Awards Dinner in Johannesburg.

Mike King, Goodyear SA's Sales and Marketing Director, paid tribute to those who race on Goodyear on the circuits in South Africa.   He explained that the awards are in sincere appreciation of their courage, competitive spirit and determination to win.

"Goodyear understands that, due to the nature of the sport, motor racing needs a very special kind of tyre. Racing helps us develop new technology, primarily in three areas of tyre design: in mould shapes, construction and materials. Much of the information gained through racing, is applied directly to high performance street tyres.   The slight improvements we make in tyre performance on the race track, is eagerly transferred to our high performance road tyres. Perhaps the most important aspect in the transfer of technology from the racing track to the road is safety.   Improving consumer tyre performance is one thing, but making the tyres safer in the process, is a responsibility Goodyear, together with other tyre manufacturers, share.

"To the men and women of South African motor racing, who boldly put our tyres to the test, and in the process help us make our tyres safer, we at Goodyear salute you and hold you forever in our highest regard," concluded Mr King.
