1970

Goodyear's Chemical Division, the world's largest producer of synthetic rubber, becomes the leading producer of polybutadiene rubber as well.


Goodyear produces its one billionth tire.


The first tires on the moon: Apollo 14's MET (Modularized Equipment Transporter) was shod with Goodyear's XLT tires.


1971

Goodyear Aerospace develops carbon-composite disk brake rotors. First used on aircraft, this technology will eventually be adopted in Formula One on the world's fastest race cars.


Goodyear equips giant earthmovers with the world's largest tires, measuring 11 1/2 feet high and weighing 7,000 pounds each.


1976

Chemical Division ships first shatterproof polyester resin soft-drink bottles (PET).


In cooperation with the Cleveland Clinic, Goodyear develops an experimental, air-driven artificial heart.


The industrial hose plant at Mount Pleasant, Iowa, starts production.


1977

Goodyear introduces the first all-season radial tire, the Tiempo.


1978

Goodyear pioneers new uses for old tires as construction materials for more than 2,000 artificial reefs and floating breakwaters, protecting harbors and providing habitats for marine life.
